Darrell Bain Over the last several years, Darrell Bain has become one of the top best selling authors in the world in the realm of electronic publishing. Most of Bain’s books are also in print. He produces a monthly newsletter, discoursing on various subjects brought up by fans or by his own voracious reading habit, written in an informal, narrative style. It is available around the first of each month from his web site at www.darrellbain.com
Darrell is the author of more than two dozen books in many genres, running the gamut from humor to mystery and science fiction to non-fiction. For the last several years he has concentrated on science fiction and suspense/thrillers, with an occasional foray into humor and short stories. Some of his most memorable titles are The Sex Gates, Savage Survival, Alien Infection, The Melanin Apocalypse, Strange Valley, The Pet Plague trilogy and the Williard Brothers series.
Darrell served 13 years in the military and his two stints in Vietnam formed the basis for his first published novel, Medics Wild, and the sequels featuring the zany Williard brothers, where the latest book has brought them up to their present day exploits. Darrell has been writing off and on all his life but really got serious about it only after the advent of computers. He purchased his first one in 1989 and has been writing furiously ever since.
While Darrell was working as a lab manager at a hospital in Texas, he met his wife Betty. He trapped her under a mistletoe sprig and they were married a year later. Darrell and Betty operated a Christmas tree farm in East Texas for many years, which became the subject and backdrop for many of his humorous stories and books.
The Bain family consists of he and his wife Betty and their dachshunds, Tonto and Susie, along with Velcro the cat. They still live on the site of their Christmas tree farm, though it is no longer in business. Darrell is a full time writer now and Betty is retired. They spend most of their leisure time reading.

Titles Available from Double Dragon Publishing | A clandestine society, financed by a billionaire, has created a new infectious virus capable of inserting genes which determine the way individuals feel about sex. The FBI and CDC have been targeted first, in hopes that infected personnel will hamper any investigation. The virus spreads rapidly, but its effects are not noticed by individuals to begin with?and when discovered, the change in sexual attitudes is not recognized as something induced into the body from an outside source. When an FBI investigator finally does suspect that something unusual is going on, the Center for Disease Control is contacted and brought into the investigation. It is quickly discovered that indeed a virus capable of changing sexual attitudes is spreading over the world. While the FBI and CDC are racing to discover the originators of the virus and to create a cure or vaccine, the investigation is hampered by the fact that the agents themselves are becoming infected. The men and women trying desperately to stop the sex virus have to cope with their own changed attitudes and hope the virus can be stopped before society is irrevocably changed. And it may already be too late.

| | A clerk working in the census bureau discovers a series of anomalies in the population of a small city located in the Ozark Mountains. Intrigued, the clerk continues to investigate. He finds that, on average, the population of the city and surrounding valley, are a little smarter, less religious, more thrifty, marry less, have a higher level of education, are more sexually liberated, have fewer illnesses and many other positive traits. The city also refuses government money for schools and roads, has little crime and no sign of racial unrest. None of these factors would mean much taken alone, but together, they spell out a population that is distinctly skewed from the normal. Surprisingly, hardly anyone in the valley realizes that most of them are different from the average. They simply think they live in a good place among good people. Then the investigation starts... | | This collection of short stories is a great way to introduce yourself to Fictionwise Author Of The Year Darrell Bain. Twins Steve and Jane grow up in a dystopic earth ruled by giant corporations. Faster than light space travel has been discovered, but extracts a terrible price. The immutable mathematics of the theory dictate that only half the ships leaving earth will make it to their destination, and of those which do, only half will return safely to earth; hence the name: Crazy Ships. With those odds, crews and colonists are drawn from the criminal class or from political prisoners and sentenced to serve on a ship.
| | Book III of the Sex Gates Trilogy
The exciting conclusion to The Sex Gates trilogy. The mystery of the sex gates has at last been solved, but a horrible dilemma arises. | | This book is a good example of what comes from mixing politics and beer. It resulted from a night of camaraderie and debauchery with my brothers. Sometime during the festivities, one of us thought up the idea of what might happen should a real, though intelligent, Redneck ever get to the White House. We all laughed like crazy at the prospect and had great fun discussing various scenarios and situations. Perhaps we also vented some of our frustration at the labyrinthine entanglements of our present political process and how it works or doesn?t work. At any rate, once I sobered up, I thought the idea might make a good book. | | The people of Masterville Valley carry prions in their bodies that could make the world a much better place-but most of humanity will never willingly accept them, for once infected, a person is able to reason much better, rejecting religious, sexual and political dogma. Being born with the prions or trying to infect others with them carries a death penalty in most Islamic nations. In America and the rest of the world, the Masterville prions have become a political football because religious leaders are so utterly opposed to them, despite compelling evidence that they imbue their carriers with a much saner life style, both sexual and social. When a newly elected moderate president is assassinated, his successor again begins using a secret cabal of the National Security Agency to spread lies and deception about Masterville Valley and its prions. The happy, peaceful people of the valley are forced to fight back, and they begin their battle by secretly spreading their prions out into the world, including the halls of congress and into the president’s own inner circle. But will the prions take effect in time to save them from zealots intent on completely destroying the people of Masterville valley and the hope for a peaceful earth it represents? | | A short "gotcha" science fiction story of alien invasion by best selling author Darrell Bain. The aliens are tiny but powerful. Things looks bad for earth until a marine general decides to give the aliens a lesson in English. | | In a world where enhanced animals have altered the ecology beyond repair, the great protective enclaves are beginning to be built, but there will be no refuge there for altered humans, nor for normal humans trying to protect their enhanced pets. A woman with feline genes, bred for sex slavery. A man who kills to protect his pet. Two truckers who don?t care about laws designed for the cities. All are on the run across a surreal landscape where their odyssey takes them into the dangerous wilds, along roads and highways rapidly becoming impassable, and into cities where they have to live as outlaws. There is a chance for them to find a normal life if they can survive long enough to be accepted as immigrants to the moon. But only two of them can go, and only if they aren?t caught first. Altered Humans is a novel set in the days before the pet plague reaches its peak, where society is in flux, where survival is for the strong, but where goodness and generosity can still be found?if you don?t die first. | | Darrell Bain’s finest novel to date. Savage Survival is a coming of age novel like no other and Lyda Brightner is a character you?ll remember forever. Raped at eleven. Forced to kill. Subjected to suffering in one brutal and horrible environment after another, with no parents or guardian to protect her as she grows up. Millions of earthmen have been captured by invulnerable aliens and are being put through the strangest and most terrifying survival tests ever imagined. Young Lyda Brightner’s first experience after being thrown into the midst of undisciplined humans is horrible enough, but she doesn?t know that the trials are just beginning. She doesn?t know that only a few hundred of the millions of captives will live through the vicious and cruel winnowing process. Again and again as she grows into a young woman, she has to call on the only resources she has available: her own innate bravery, her quick mind, her unwavering belief in the goodness of the majority of humans and ultimately, an enduring hope that one day she will find someone to love. But even if she lives through all this, she will still have to face the final question. What do the aliens have in mind for the few survivors? | | Genetic duplicates of people start dropping out of thin air right beside the originals. The duplicates are complete except for one little detail: they?re dead. Frank Winston begins an investigation that widens to include the mystery of a vanished airliner that had his parents on board, as well as those of the first person who found a dead twin on her doorstep, Linda Vesprie. Together, they discover that quantum physics is even stranger than scientists had believed, and that their world and an infinite series of alternate earths are in dire peril. Neither Frank nor Linda realize they are being misled when a woman from an alternate earth asks for their help. When they discover the duplicity, it is already far too late to do anything about it. Shadowy monsters, conniving federal agents, alternate worlds and a lonely scientist racing against time to save both his world and earth make this latest offering from best selling author Darrell Bain and collaborator Barbara Hodges a page-turning adventure that strings the suspense out to the last page. | | Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the other sex? What problems do they face, what pleasures can they experience? The Transexual Anthology may help you find the answers. This collection of stories by renowned authors in the field include Darrell Bain and Jeanine Berry, Diana Hignutt, Thomas Farrell, Dallas Denny, and Mike Reynolds. | | In the future, Monitors are stronger, smarter and longer-lived than normal humans. They also have a sex drive much higher and more versatile than other people. Monitors face constant danger when they infiltrate and observe various cultures for possible violations of The Articles Of Hegemony. When Janet Presley became a Monitor, she never expected to wind up investigating a planet where females outnumbered males ten to one, and yet were completely subjugated. Nor did she ever think she would have to pose as a sex slave in order to save her life and that of her libido-enhanced companions. The long trip to Arrowhead is enjoyable, with six highly sexed Monitors aboard ship, but as they discover exactly what they?re getting into, Janet knows the fun and games will end very shortly, perhaps ending her life as well. The male dominated society of Arrowhead is determined to resist incorporation into the empire by the only means possible; they will see to it that the Monitors vanish forever. And there’s one other problem, one the Monitors have never seen before? | | THE ORIGINAL SEX GATES NOVEL
This is the Sex Gates novel as originally written by Darrell Bain alone. It has a completely different ending, and it contains one more major character and several more supporting ones. In this original version, all questions are answered and all issues resolved in this one book. It is being published now in response to all the fan mail and interest the trilogy generated?and continues to generate. The Sex Gates has already become a science fiction cult classic and this book should be a significant addition to the sex gates universe. | | Since their introduction in Medics Wild!, the zany Williard brothers? adventures have become increasingly science fictionish in nature, involving a real dinosaur in the Congo one time and factual evidence of Bigfoot (or more likely an alien) the next, but this escapade tops even those past exploits for strangeness. THREE FOR THE MONEY takes place after the turn of the century when the Williard brothers of Vietnam war fame are beginning to show their age, but aren?t ready to slow down yet. They are headed into their wildest adventure yet, involving a treasure worth far more than their inherited billions even if they can collect the money, which becomes increasingly doubtful, because others want it, too. Their attempt to find the money and the baffling object that may be the real prize will set the stage for their antics to last for many, many years to come. Of course first they have to defeat the mysterious Mister H and his beautiful assistant, the CIA, the FBI, and the Mexican army, then find the money, collect the unknown prize and escape with their lives. That’s a tall order for anyone--except the Williard brothers, the most amazing trio to appear in fiction since The Three Musketeers! | | This is an updated version of the original article, with comment, descriptions and additional novels added. It is an entertaining discussion and listing of more than 130 science fiction novels, dubbed by Darrell Bain as his ?Most Readable (and re-readable) Science Fiction Novels?. His selections have been culled from more than 10,000 science fiction novels read over his lifetime, beginning at age twelve. Almost anyone who loves the genre is bound to find at least a few great books listed here they have missed for one reason or another, or perhaps reminded of ones they?ve read and would like to see back on their bookshelves. | | When terrorists try to poison undergraduate schools with a nerve agent, the scheme backfires. Instead of causing death, the chemical stimulates the mirror neurons in the students? brains, causing them to multiply and become hyperactive. This, in turn, leads to unusual talents. As the children grow, their teachers and other institutions become very interested in the odd perceptive ability they begin displaying. Government, industry, military, drug cartels, businesses and the underworld all want to use them for their own purposes. Some of the young men and women have different ideas. They will fight to keep their freedom?especially after a few of them begin to develop another odd talent, one that may change the world. | | Now available in a single volume; all three novels in the Pet Plague trilogy | | Everyone, male or female, who drinks very much and frequents singles bars has probably woken up one morning with a less than desirable bedmate, one who looked very good right before the bar closed. The less appealing a person is physically, and the more they have had to drink, the more likely it is that such an event has occurred.
Timothy Meeker was so physically repulsive that it happened often to him. Going home with a bar hag was about the only time he ever got laid. Finally he decided to do something to change the situation. Boy, did he ever!
| | When Jeffrey Crowder bought his autistic son some magnets and toy electric motors to play with, he had no idea what his impulsive idea would lead to. It was just that he had played with magnets when he was a child and he remembered how much fun they had been. He thought the toy magnets and motors might be just the thing to interest his son and break through the barrier between his autistic mind and events in the outside world. They certainly did that, in a way Jeffrey could never have imagined! | | It looked like a perfectly ordinary chicken egg, just like the others in the carton. There was only one difference. This egg couldn?t be broken. Becky wanted to throw it away. Carl decided to keep it and try to find out what it was made of. But then the egg began changing. And changing. | | When an eleven year old super genius begins cracking codes and breaking into financial and military files all over the world, simply because she wants to learn about new things, the security agencies naturally become very upset. However, instead of trying to track down the source of the hacking, they might have been better off leaving well enough alone. Darby wants to learn and doesn?t intend to let anyone get in her way. | | A new short story from Darrell Bain! Won?t it be great to talk to animals? But what if no one believed you, and you were a nine year old girl named Samantha? When the woman doesn?t know her name or where she came from or how she got there, and begins appearing and disappearing out of thin air, you know rest of the day is going to be screwy, too. | | When does a species become human? This was a question which now might possibly be answered, using newly developed techniques. Care would be needed, though. It wouldn?t do to upset what had gone before. | | A stellar accident has thrown hundreds of small circular areas of East Texas far into the past. The displacement circles include such random spots as a roadside park, a Wal-Mart Superstore, the streets of a small town -- and the death row section of the state prison.
| | Girls and young women are disappearing without a trace, without a clue. No bodies are ever found. | | A renegade chemist discovers a drug which can be given quickly and surreptitiously and which will convert anyone almost instantly to a state of mind where the merest suggestion becomes an imperative need to obey. While the chemist is selling the drug to child molesters and rapists and robbers and using it himself to suborn women for the foulest of purposes, a team of detectives are in a desperate search for the source of the drug. They must find it before the formula becomes common knowledge -- and changes the very nature of society. What David O?Neal, the lead detective, doesn?t know is that others in the department and from government agencies are working just as hard to secure the drug for their own use. | | Darrell Bain’s latest novel encompasses the spirit of the old American pioneers who risked all for a chance of a better life in a new environment. With conditions in America deteriorating, the Bentley family decides to take advantage of the recently discovered method for reaching the stars. They sign a contract with a corporation in return for partial financing of their venture to a new world. But as they travel on the space trails, they gradually discover that all is not right about the expedition they?re on. When the discrepancies finally come to a head, they find the corporation has deceived all the immigrants. Regardless, there is no turning back, for the leaders of the expedition have outsmarted themselves. All books have individually won awards or placed as finalists. Medics Wild! in particular has won a variety of accolades and has been described as funny as the long-time running television show... M*A*S*H. Darrell was a medic in the Vietnam War and I personally believe that he drew from his personal experiences. | | During the last part of October of this year, 2006, we had a tremendous amount of rain over a period of a week, twenty inches or so. During much of that time the satellite for my computer couldn’t be contacted so I wasn’t able to get on line. Still, I can’t stay away from my computer. I finished up my last novel, Warp Point then began looking through some old files I had kept that were in a different word processing program. I had never been able to access them before, but while fooling around, I finally found the right key. The result? I discovered a few of my long lost humorous stories, plus a little vignette on psi ability. They’ve never been published. All the material I found which I thought readers might enjoy is in the collection here. I have to admit, I got some laugh-out-loud responses from my wife, Betty. I also had to get her permission before publishing one story-but that’s getting ahead of myself. Besides, if you’re like me, you’re wanting the author to quit babbling so you can get on with the reading. So here are the stories. I hope you enjoy them. | | Take something that’s been around for thousands of years. Mix it with a little future technology. Give it time to spread, and a system of government comes into being that is better than anything ever thought of before. And it was such a simple idea.
| | When Craig was dragooned into going shopping for a new bed with his wife Penny, he never imagined the pleasure and special effects the strange new bed would produce for them. He never imagined the danger, either, until they became wanted by every security agent in the country! | | The zany, politically incorrect Williard brothers are back, and this time they’re shooting for Mars, trying to spend the billions of dollars inherited from the Mafia Godfather. But there’s a financially and politically powerful organization that’s been seriously hampering manned space flight for more than two generations, backed by shadowy beings who may not have originated on Earth at all. So far they’ve kept manned space flight from progressing very fast or far, but they’ve never confronted the Williard brothers either. Along with their girlfriends, the Williards intend to go to Mars or die trying -- a distinct possibility! | | Tonto, a cross-eyed, ADHD affected little weenie dog with only one testicle, who already has a self-created job of compulsively shoveling pine straw into piles with sticks, is suddenly drafted into another job: saving the world from an alien invasion! Can he manage both jobs? Well perhaps, if a compulsively cursing alcoholic super genius and his co-ed groupies combine talents with a cigar chomping Italian whose air-headed secretary inadvertently gives him unlimited pentagon funding, and then help out Tonto’s owners, who think politicians are almost as smart as lizards and even smarter than grasshoppers. Get ready for a wild and crazy ride with Tonto and his friends, the most amazing characters Darrell Bain has created so far in his eclectic writing career! This is a science fiction story so insane that it only begins to make sense when it’s discovered that the aliens had a part in Tonto’s conception to begin with! | | ROBYN’S ROCK by best selling author Darrell Bain is a story that covers a twenty year span. An odd looking rock, picked up by Amanda and Justin’s granddaughter Robyn when she was six years old was saved by her grandparents. Will she be able to ignore the summons when it happens again even if she wants to? What would you do in a case like hers? What do you think would happen? How does this power work? A remarkable and well thought out story that you’re sure to enjoy.
| | My younger brother Gary is a charming, humorous, articulate, romantic adventurer and warrior. He’s one of those types of men the rest of us admire and fantasize about, wishing we could be more like them. In the olden days, he would have been a Mountain Man or a Knight or perhaps even a Pirate or Buccaneer. In any era, he would always have been one of the first to cross the mountains, the wide rivers or brave the unexplored oceans. Even today, in the late autumn of his life, he’s always doing something new and interesting and he always has fun at it. We’ve had many a laugh together and shed a few tears during our lives. He’s always been my best friend and I only wish I had preserved more of our conversations and letters. What you have here only touches the surface of many of the things he’s done and places he’s been. And for all you fans of my Williard Brothers series, after reading this book you might guess that Gary is the avatar of Jason "Jumpin’ Jase" Williard, the middle brother of the three, and the aviator whose almost supernatural flying ability gets them out of many a scrape in their continuing adventures. | | This isn’t really a science fiction story, but what other category do you put the story of a talking dog in? Especially when it’s the story of the dog who was the avatar for the science fiction novel Bark! And finally, a talking dog makes it science fiction in my book, even if he did do it only that one magical night. | | The Galaxy is being colonized by well financed groups and nations but the UN is increasing its control of earth and now wants to control the colonies as well. A confederacy of ships bought by groups from the United States has a different idea about the type government they want and are willing to fight for it. Sage Gomez learns his parents are among them and that he will be leaving for the stars. He has no idea of how much trouble is waiting for them beyond earth. He is going to have to age awfully fast! | | A starship on a circuit to service earth's colonies is sabotaged and winds up irrevocably lost in space. The only option is to find a habitable planet to live on. Aboard the ship is a contingent of convicts bound for a prison planet, an army company rotating to one of the colony worlds, government officials and scientists going or coming from the colonies, a contingent of prospective colonists going out to pioneer and a miscellany of other passengers. A crew of two hundred fifty is now responsible for a thousand people after they finally find a new world to settle on. Add in a mad captain, combative convicts and some unworldly aliens and it becomes all that acting Captain Travis Callahan can handle-and then some! | | When Mark and Alice decide to install a program of their own devising into the only quantum computer in the world, wildly unintended consequences occur. The computer not only becomes self-aware, but the new program produces an unchangeable core directive which impels it to protect Mark and Alice as well as itself. It doesn't matter what the political, religious and military establishments think of a sentient computer running rampant on the internet and into secret files of governments all over the world, or what they try in order to stop it. Quanty intends to protect Mark and Alice and itself with all the power at its command no matter who gets hurt or helped in the process. The result is Mark and Alice becoming the focus of governments, spies and the military of every nation, since only they can control Quanty. Or can they? They're on the run but Quanty's unasked for "help" causes them to fall into one disaster after another, with no end in sight. | | A surprise assault on an Exploration Corps starship by implacably hostile, xenophobic aliens leaves its one remaining longboat as the only option for warning the home worlds of the existence of the predators. Unfortunately, the starship met disaster while thousands of light years from Earth. Theoretically, that sort of voyage in a longboat is possible but has never been attempted. In order to return, the crew has to stop on numerous unknown planets to renew supplies and hydrogen fuel many, many times along the way. They know they will certainly face danger and inimical life forms, as well as the hazards of braving interstellar space in a ship meant only for travel within a solar system. And before they get anywhere close to Earth they will need to figure out a way to destroy a much larger and much better armed alien starship. The ship shadowing their every move must not be allowed to follow them home to Earth and its colonies. The long journey has to succeed, even as more and more members of the crew fall prey to perils of the incredible journey. Humanity must be warned. There will be no second chance. Fail, and the poorly armed home worlds will likely die. | | The Frontier Rebellion is another masterful novel by Darrell Bain, author of Human by Choice, Alien Infection, Starship Down, The Long Way Home and many others.
| | This is a much revised, updated and re-edited version of a simple article I wrote years ago listing my 100 most re-readable science fiction novels. In this edition, that article has now grown to over 16,000 words and encompasses somewhere around 200 novels that entail untold hours of treasured reading experiences. So much new science fiction has come out in the last few years, as well as older titles I missed when this was first published, that I felt readers deserved a new, expanded edition with many more entries and descriptions of them, including a list of my favorite science fiction series. Thus the new title. |

Does it have a unique place with definable limits in space? Does it move independently according to its own purpose? Or does it only move when other things move, completely dependent on prevailing conditions and binding dimensions in its surrounding space-a causal result bound to the whole? Perhaps it’s just a simpleminded construct humans have concocted to explain the inexplicable. Is it vaguely possible that it’s a set of branes slightly out of sync and we may pass from one to the next at will? Maybe it’s a simple kink in dimensions that can be crossed by anyone walking in precisely the right direction. It could be that it’s just a mental state altered simply by a minor amount of imagination applied correctly. Perhaps it is no more than a drug- or mantra-induced change of mental state-something hallucinated-something seen but unseeable. Or is there more to it than we can fathom? In the world of physics, all of this-and much more-is being looked into by serious, conservative scientists as well as those with their mental equipment more loosely adjusted-or even unfastened completely, their brains rolling about like marbles in an empty railroad freight car. |
